The Institute's goal of preserving and promoting jazz includes introducing people around the world to this great American art form.
Most recently the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance college students led a weeklong jazz performance and education tour in the Basilicata region of southern Italy in May 2011. As part of this cultural exchange, the college students performed throughout the city of Matera, appearing at the Onyx Jazz Club and conducting master classes for students at Matera's music conservatory. They also performed in concert halls to standing room audiences in the city of Tito. Between performances, the college students enjoyed exploring Basilicata's picturesque mountaintop towns and 2,000-year-old city centers.
